Raasa-Leela - a spiritual message

*************************************

Among all the minature paintings portraying Lord Krishna , the one that I find very captivating is 'Raasa-Leela'.

Its a very attractive one with Krishna and Radha dancing in the middle of a large circle formed by Gopikas dancing with 'her own' Krishna . Personalised service ;)

The picture that comes to our mind when we talk about Lord Krishna is one of a casanova , a jokester or a prankster. On the surface it looks like Krishna is having a whale of a time dancing with all those nubile nymphs. But just a little study unravels the true meaning behind the portrait.

The devotional fervor Krishna created in the gopikas is best explained by the rasa-leela dance, wherein each of hundreds of gopikas perceived Krishna to be dancing with them alone.
As the dance progressed, the gopikas acted and moved in different ways: one sang on a high and another on a lower pitch; a third reclined on the shoulder of Krishna .This diversity of movement points to a significant fact in spiritual life: no two devotees have the same identical journey.

God draws different people in different ways. He is the great loverand for him every human being is precious. He multi-locates himself, leading each devotee according to his/her individual wishes.

The love between Krishna on one hand and all other Gopikas on the other was quite devoid of any physical connotations. . It was the spirutual craving of the individual soul to get united with the Supremo.

There is an inner innocent girl waiting within each of us, desiring to emerge and play with our friendly cowherd in an exchange of love.

I like the painting for its very colorful attractive looks , but somehow this explanation adds to its charm .

And this perspective is more appealing to me than portraying Krishna as a philanderer.

Hello Ram :)

Really? Is this gender-nonspecific?? ;-) //
naaa !! I am quite broad-minded here. One can choose either to dance with a cowherd
or a gopika ;-)

actually 'inner innocent girl' refers to the desire each one has to be carefree and blissfully uninhibited.

those words sums up the meaning of 'bhakthi' as seen by Vivekananda

In the words of Swami Vivekananda:

"What love shakes the whole nature of man, what love runs through every atom of his being, makes him mad, makes him forget his own nature, transforms him, makes him a god as the love between man and woman? In this sweet representation of divine love God is our husband. We are all women; there are no men in this world; there is but One man - Hari and he is our beloved. All that love which man gives to a woman, or woman to man, is here given up to the Lord."

BTW, 'spiritual' spelling thappa irrukku. //
thank for pointing out , Ram :)

A very great physics concept of Parallel Universes explained in such simple words. //

I guess this excerpt also shows his ubiquitous state.

'This seems to be the idea behind the belief that Krishna had sixteen
thousand wives and lived with them separately at the same time. In one
palace he could be seen being fanned by his wife, in another he played dice with his queen, in third he was fondling his son, while in the fourth palace he entertained his wife with light stories and so on.'

Excellent!!! Hats off to you Sree!! //

hi sri,

an interesting way of looking!

BTW r.prabhu I just wonder how does parallel universe or multiverse relates here!

perhaps we may relate multiple state of existence as in quantum physics, with the help of Schroedinger's cat experiment! Observer's act of observation results in the type of outcome!

A nice post sri... admired the paintings.

Yes, there is I guess, cos each universe resonates at a constant frequency, that could be construed as time. Any quantum fissure caused between two or more universes may cause object in one universe to get in touch with an another usually temporarily.

Actually when I put up the post , I thgt it wld interest u . Your comments in Enagar about Hinduism portrayed ur knowledge on the subject.

hey , I read the story of My Sassy girl on the net. It was very interesting. Though I cld make out the connection from the beginning , the plot was very interesting.
So , I guess u dont like the girl's behavior in the first part of the movie ;)

I've always like minature paintings from Rajasthan.
you are right , our hotels shd display these paintings. why even our offices shd be adorned with these paintings.
Thiru...these are available in Rajasthali (emporium) .I am not sure if there is one in chennai...but can enquire and let u know.
dont go for the copies..even the original ones are very inexpensive and I shd say the framing is more exp than the actual painting.

Lord Krishna's Omnipresence is the fact that the Gopiyar's could see him everywhere//
what was more attractive was the way He changed himself according to each one's taste and mind-set. He'd sing and dance to keep pace with each Gopi.
Now THAT's nice :)

Thanks. BTW I have watched and enjoyed several episodes of TNG, but yet to watch episodes covering parallel worlds! ya its addictive, and makes one ponder upon unexplored territories, if one chooses to!

BTW if your are interested in Sci-Fic on parallel worlds I would recommend you Sliders

I often try to understand related true scientific theories within my limits. For parallel universe there is one interesting article written by Max Tegmark (MIT) (You might check Max' multiverse FAQ) in SCIAM.

Just to add on to you. Or rather a digression if not an antithesis.

KRISHNA DOESN'T EXIST, without the individual - here each gopika. He is the "innermost need" of each gopika, which each has to realize for oneself n not search outside. He is the "need" you make up.

Viewed differently, Krishna is the embodiment of our insatiable need to be "the free being", devoid of all committments - the rebel that each one of us want to be or at least relate to.

Hello SK :)

Just to add on to you. Or rather a digression if not an antithesis. //
hmm..

He is the "innermost need" of each gopika, which each has to realize for oneself n not search outside. //
oh..its the innermost need , but one has to realize for oneself...which means one has to analyse and learn about oneself. ok....but why is that Krishna cannot be expected to fullfil that need ?

"the free being", devoid of all committments - the rebel that each one of us want to be or at least relate to. //
yes..that makes a lot of sense...like living life with a sweet abandon..

thanks , sk :)
